“New Voices of the Yiddish Stage” reviewed by Chana Mlotek in the Forverts

Yiddish song expert and YIVO Music Archivist Chana Mlotek shared her positive impressions of the concert series “New Voices of the Yiddish Stage: A Grand Concert by the Hottest Young Talent Performing New Songs and Interpretations of the Classics”. Mlotek’s article appeared in the Forverts on October 16, 2009 (section 2, page 10). “New Voices of the Yiddish Stage” featured Taylor Bergen-Chrisman, Annette Ezekiel, Rich “Ruvn” Kass, Daniella Rabbani, Alicia Jo Rabins, Miryem-Khaye Seigel, Dmitri “Zisl-Yeysef” Slepovitch, and Motl Temkin, with musical direction by Zalmen Mlotek. The series was presented by the National Yiddish Theatre – Folksbiene and CUNY (City University of New York) in September and October 2009.

Miryem-Khaye Seigel awarded scholarship to Klez Kanada 2009

Miryem-Khaye Seigel received a scholarship to attend Klez Kanada 2009, a Yiddish cultural and educational program that took place at Camp B’nai B’rith from August 24-30, 2009. Miryem-Khaye Seigel featured in film “Ida’s Story”

Miryem-Khaye Seigel’s voice is featured in the newly released documentary film, “Ida’s Story”. The film explores the life of Ida Sokoloff, a Jewish woman born in 1910 in the Ukraine.

Miryem-Khaye Seigel presents Yiddish lecture
at YIVO Institute for Jewish Research

On April 24, 2009, Miryem-Khaye Seigel presented a Yiddish-language lecture at YIVO Institute for Jewish Research: “Di oystres fun Nukhem Stutshkov: Yidishe radioskriptn in der nyu-yorker shtot-bibliotek” [The Treasures of Nahum Stutchkoff: Yiddish Radio Scripts in the New York Public Library]. Stutchkoff, a renowned Yiddish linguist, was also a prolific writer of Yiddish radio dramas and commercials for WEVD radio in New York in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s.

Yiddish community mourns the loss of Pesach Fiszman z”l

The worldwide Yiddish community deeply mourns the loss of beloved Yiddish teacher and storyteller Pesach Fiszman z”l on January 16, 2009. His untimely passing occured just a few short weeks after he presented a Chanukah program with Miryem-Khaye Seigel at the Sholem-Aleykhem Kultur-Tsenter in the Bronx. Pesach’s warm personality and his heartfelt devotion to Yiddish and will be deeply missed by students and Yiddishists around the world.

“Nyu-york, nyu-york” on CKS 810 radio, Winnipeg

Miryem-Khaye Seigel’s songs “Nyu-york, nyu-york” and “Mit dir” were featured on Rochelle Zucker’s Yiddish radio show on CKS 810 radio, Winnipeg on February 8, 2008 and January 18, 2009.

Yiddish in Poland

Miryem-Khaye Seigel (Yiddish singer, songwriter, and performer) and Motl Didner (Associate Artistic Director, Folksbiene Yiddish Theatre) taught Yiddish song and theater, respectively, at the International Summer Yiddish Language and Culture Seminar in Śródborów, Poland, this summer. Miryem-Khaye and Motl, artistic collaborators on several Folksbiene projects including Purim in Khelm, Mames loshn-kugl, and Makht a Tsimes!, were invited to teach at the seminar by Mrs. Golda Tencer, head of the Shalom Foundation.

Makht a Tsimes!

Makht a Tsimes! , a new revue presented by the Folksbiene Troupe, debuted in East Brunswick, NJ, in April 2007, with subsequent performances in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Massachusetts. Makht a Tsimes! is the Folksbiene Troupe’s second touring show since the Troupe’s inception in 2004. Appearing: Leizer Burko, Motl Didner, Danielle “Elize-Rokhl” Dorter, Richard “Ruvn” Kass, Miriam Lipner, Daniella Rabbani, and Miryem-Khaye Seigel.

Makht a Tsimes! features classic sketches by Moyshe Nudelman, Dzigan and Schumacher, and Mikhl Rosenberg (including selections from the collection of Mina Bern and Ben Bonus), and new material by Leizer Burko, Motl Didner, and Miryem-Khaye Seigel. Musical selections include classic songs by Abe Ellstein, Abraham Goldfaden, Mikhl Gordon, Jacob Kalish, Molly Picon, Joseph Rumshinksy, Chaim Tauber, and Mark Warshawsky. The show also features two of Miryem-Khaye Seigel’s new songs: the Yiddishist anthem “Nyu-york, Nyu-york” and the theme song “Makht a tsimes!”.
